menor massa at\u00f4mica conhecida. \u00c9 um g\u00e1s inflam\u00e1vel, sem cor (incolor), sem odor (inodoro) e insol\u00favel em \u00e1gua.<\/p><p>Por possuir propriedades distintas, ele n\u00e3o se enquadra claramente em nenhum grupo da tabela peri\u00f3dica, sendo muitas vezes colocado em um grupo separado, por possuir apenas 1 el\u00e9tron na camada de val\u00eancia (ou \u00faltima camada).<\/p><p>O hidrog\u00eanio \u00e9 o mais abundante dentre os elementos qu\u00edmicos, constituindo aproximadamente 75% da massa elementar do Universo. Diversas estrelas s\u00e3o compostas primariamente de hidrog\u00e9nio em seu estado de plasma.<\/p><p>Na Terra, entretanto, o hidrog\u00e9nio elementar \u00e9 relativamente raro, sendo industrialmente produzido a partir de hidrocarbonetos presentes no g\u00e1s natural, tais como o metano.<\/p><p>O g\u00e1s hidrog\u00eanio foi o primeiro produzido artificialmente, tendo sido formalmente descrito por Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (tamb\u00e9m conhecido como Paracelso) por meio da rea\u00e7\u00e3o qu\u00edmica entre metais e \u00e1cidos fortes.<\/p><p>No entanto, Paracelso n\u00e3o sabia que o g\u00e1s produzido por esta rea\u00e7\u00e3o qu\u00edmica era constitu\u00eddo por um novo elemento qu\u00edmico, e, em 1671, Robert Boyle redescobriu a subst\u00e2ncia, e descreveu a rea\u00e7\u00e3o entre limalhas de ferro e \u00e1cidos dilu\u00eddos, o que resultava na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de g\u00e1s hidrog\u00eanio.<\/p><p>Posteriormente, em 1766, Henry Cavendish foi o primeiro a reconhecer o g\u00e1s hidrog\u00eanio como uma discreta subst\u00e2ncia, ao identificar o g\u00e1s de uma rea\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e1cido-metal como \u201car inflam\u00e1vel&#8221; e descobrindo mais profundamente, em 1781, que o g\u00e1s produz \u00e1gua quando queimado.
